Jafet Library inaugurates new e-classroom

In Events,News and Announcements by AUB Libraries / December 23, 2014 / 0 Comments

The Antoun Ghattas Karam Electronic Classroom was relocated, expanded and upgraded to become a state-of-the-art facility.

On the 22nd of December, Dr. Shadi Karam, his wife Zeina, and several members of their family, along with Provost Dallal, Vice President for Regional External Programs Dr. Hasan Diab, IFI Director Dr. Tarek Mitri, and members of the AUB community gathered in Jafet Library to inaugurate the new Antoun Ghattas Karam e-Classroom. Guests were warmly welcomed by the University Librarian Dr. Lokman Meho and by library staff.

The University Libraries used the financial support which was worth USD 150,000 from the Karam family to relocate the e-classroom to a larger place and redesign the space to allow for an interactive and more congenial learning experience, and better outcomes.

These enhancements will go a long way towards improving students’ learning experience at the Libraries by providing them with a modern training facility and the proper technology and equipment. The Antoun Ghattas Karam e-classroom is the site where most library information sessions and special training workshops are held. The classroom accommodates more than 500 information literacy sessions per annum, mainly for students, but also for faculty/staff to teach them about Library collections and about best practice in research.

The new auditorium-shaped e-classroom now accommodates 30 seats in a layout which all students sit face-to-face with the instructor.

The e-classroom is equipped with all-in-one computers, 23-inch touchscreen, full HD with cameras. The e-classroom also has an active board with a giant projection screen, an automation system to control sound, lighting, curtains, and projection screen—all controllable from a touch panel on the podium or an iPad. The podium is equipped with 19 inch HD touchscreen, Blu-ray reader, a recording system with two digital cameras, wireless and handheld microphones, as well as a high-tech classroom management application for computers. This application allows for more room for interaction and control during library information sessions.

Dr. Meho, Dr. Dallal and Dr. Karam spoke at the new e-classroom opening ceremony. Dr. Karam received a plaque of appreciation from AUB in recognition for his continued loyalty and generosity.

In his speech, and in the name of more than 50.000 students who used the old e-classroom, Dr. Meho thanked Mrs. Zeina and Dr. Shadi Karam for their generosity in funding the upgrading of the initial Antoun Ghattas Karam E-Classroom.

“Zeina and Shadi not only did you provide us with the financial support to develop the first e-classroom at AUB back in 2004, but now, 10 years later, you once again race to the occasion to support the founding of the first fully interactive e-classroom on campus with state-of-the-art teaching and learning tools, and it could not come at a better time as AUB has recently launched a strategic academic plan that supports initiatives related to e-Learning including online teaching and distance education, among others” said the Provost in his speech.

“AUB was sewn into his destiny” said Dr. Shadi Karam describing his father the late Dr. Antoun Ghattas Karam. “He spent 42 years of his life at AUB as a student then a faculty member”, “he even passed away at the AUB Hospital” added Dr. Karam.

After the ribbon-cutting event, guests toured the new facility and watched a short presentation about the new e-classrom project. A reception followed where guests met and mingled discussing and appreciating the new facility and its donors.
