In Collections,News and Announcements by AUB Libraries / April 12, 2018 / 0 Comments

The University Libraries are glad to announce their subscription to “Global Health”, a specialist bibliographic abstracting and indexing database dedicated to public health and completing the picture of international medical and health research by capturing key literature.

Global Health is part of CAB Direct, an extensive source of reference in the applied life sciences, incorporating two leading bibliographic databases: CAB Abstracts and Global Health.

Derived from over 7,000 journals, reports, books and conferences, Global Health contains over 3 million scientific records from 1973 to present. Abstracted publications are from more than 100 countries and in 50 languages. Most of the relevant papers are translated into English.

Approximately 185,000 records are added to Global Health each year, and over 96% of these records include an English abstract.

Global Health also has a growing number of full text articles of over 90,000 from journals, conferences, and reports.

The Graduate Students Workshop Series: a 4-year prevailing partnership that continues to prosper

In News and Announcements,Projects,Workshops by AUB Libraries / October 26, 2017 / 0 Comments

In 2014, the University Libraries began a collaboration with The Graduate Council and The Writing Center to initiate the “Research and Thesis Writing Workshop Series” catered for AUB Graduate students.

The workshop series was established to introduce continuing graduate students to key concepts in research and academic writing, and to inform them about academic support available at AUB.

Since 2014, more than 15 workshops have been held, and the partnership has proved to be a great success, with more than 500 graduate students from different faculties attending the workshops overall. In fact, several of the sessions were re-runs due to the overbooking of seats at the workshops.

Workshop attendees from different backgrounds joined the conversation to learn more about the library resources covering their fields of study, as well as about the AUB thesis formatting and submission process and about the use of Citation Management software (RefWorks and EndNote) to import, organize and generate citations. They also learned about the support provided by the Graduate Council and the Writing Center during their thesis writing process and whenever they have research or writing related concerns.

Assessments done after the sessions have shown a high percentage of satisfaction from the graduate students, who found the sessions informative and constructive for their research knowledge and skills. The concerned partners are also assessing the graduate students’ needs through the “Student Development and Success Survey”.

A new workshop entitled “Humanities/Social Sciences Thesis: Advice from a Panel of AUB Professors” has now been introduced to the series to address the specific topics related to certain fields of study. The workshop was held on Wednesday, October 25 in College Hall-B1 and included a panel of AUB faculty members, who are specialists in the field and who can provide their hands-on expertise and insight. Moderated by Dr. Erin Zimmerman, Director of the Writing Center, the panel comprised of Dr. Carmen Geha (Public Administration, FAS), Dr. David Currell (English Literature, FAS), Dr. Fida Afiouni (Human Resource Management, OSB), Dr. Mahmoud Al-Batal (Arabic Language, FAS) and Dr. Rim Saab (Psychology, FAS).

There are three more research writing workshops planned for this academic year, with the first, “Before the Thesis: Preparing your Literature Review and Proposal,” happening on Tuesday, November 7, from 11:30am till 1:00pm. In addition, a STEM-focused thesis-writing panel, similar to the Humanities/Social Sciences one, is planned for the Spring 2018 term. A list of similar graduate related events, including the series, is available at the Graduate Council web site. The page contains presentations from past events and information about future events.

To know more about the series and about upcoming workshops, contact the University Libraries by email: jftref@aub.edu.lb or by phone: 01-350 000 ext. 2629.
