Mr. Habib Nassib Hammam (BA ’66, MA ’69) continues to give to the AUB University Libraries

October 28, 2016

The Hammam family continues its legacy and continues to give to the AUB libraries, via a second consecutive donation during this year.

Dr. Lokman Meho, Director of the University Libraries, welcomed Mr. Habib Nassib Hammam (BA ’66, MA ’69), who on the morning of October 28th donated around 60 books to the University Libraries (UL), all from his personal collection. The event was held in Jafet Library and was attended by the office of development, represented by Mrs. Mariam Sabbah (Associate Director – Major Gifts), in addition to several University librarians and staff members.

The donated books are rare and very valuable, once belonging to the donor’s father, Dr. Nassib Hammam. Some have handwritten notes and are signed by prominent figures. They perfectly complement Hammam’s previous donations to the UL.

The topics of the books vary and include history of the middle east and the Arab world, medicine, poetry, social sciences and religion, in addition to various dictionaries and some academic books.

During the event, Hammam talked about his family’s “long relationship” with AUB and described AUB as his second home noting that as he travels more and more around the world, he realizes what a “big home” AUB is.

Hammam thanked the UL for giving him an “avenue to keep these material where they can do some good” adding that his donations will reserve the legacy of the Hammam family, for “if it were [his family] to leave a footprint, it would be here [at AUB]”.  Hammam implied that there are more collections and consequently more donations to come in the upcoming years as his journey with the family collection has only just began.

Dr. Meho, University Librarian, thanked Mr. Hammam for the “very valuable collection that will benefit students and researchers of the AUB community and of the region”, grateful for the trust bestowed upon the Libraries with this family treasure, and positive that the collection has found the right home.

Last August, Mr. Hammam made a previous valuable donation of material to the UL, consisting of historical photographs of AUB students’ life, as well as the English translation of the speech of Ahmed Djemal Pasha delivered to students of the Syrian Protestant College during his visit on January 29th, 1917. The donation also included documents and photographs of events by the AUB Alumni Association- North Lebanon Chapter- in the early 1960s.
