Highlight: Online Video Collections at the University Libraries

In Collections,Events by AUB Libraries / September 30, 2016 / 0 Comments

On September 22 and during the University Libraries Open Day Annual event the libraries’ introduced its growing online video collection during a presentation in Jafet Library’s Antoun Ghattas Karam e-classroom.

Since 2014, the University Libraries has been acquiring online video databases through subscription so as to meet the increasing demand for multimedia resources for teaching, research and publishing purposes. Tens of thousands of videos across many disciplines are now available for AUB students and faculty members.

Videos are available using video streaming technology such that video streams are viewed from the internet browser and don’t require a player software. They are viewed in real time and do not need to be downloaded as an entire file.

The core of the UL streaming video resources consists of four main collections:

  • Academic Video Online: Premium a multidisciplinary collection of videos that touches on the curriculum needs of virtually every department at AUB
  • Sage Knowledge a series of online collections developed in partnership with leading academics, societies and practitioners, to deliver cutting-edge pedagogical collections mapped to disciplinary curricular needs within the social sciences
  • Business Education in Video features executive interviews, corporate training videos, case studies, “How To” features and documentary films that focus on all aspects of the global business environment
  • Business Education Complete Online (BECO) which includes textbooks, book chapters, cases, corporate training videos, sample business documents, executive-oriented research reports and more. One of its featured video collections, entitledFilmakers Library Onlineprovides award-winning documentaries with relevance across the curriculum—race and gender studies, human rights, globalization and global studies, multiculturalism, international relations, criminal justice, the environment, bioethics, health, political science and current events, psychology, arts, literature, and more.

Online Exhibit: Comics: A very serious Matter- Comics in the Curriculum

In Collections,Events,News and Announcements by AUB Libraries / September 29, 2016 / 0 Comments

The University Libraries, Archives and Special Collections Department, in collaboration with the Sawwaf Comics Initiative at AUB, launches an online exhibit, entitledComics: A very serious Matter; Comics in the Curriculum”.

The online exhibit showcases the AUB Libraries’ rich comics collection, and highlights  the great potential and ability that comics have to capture the “pulse of the time”, to support liberal arts curricula at academic institutions by shedding light on many questions, concepts, ideas, historical periods, social and economic issues, power relations, etc. across disciplines: comics and classics; comics and politics; comics and literature; comics and history; comics and gender; comics and urbanism; comics and architecture, etc. Through comics, a plethora of subjects and perspectives opens up to educators and students alike, in a novel, engaging, contextual and meaningful manner.

This exhibit focuses on some of these questions from the perspective of Arab comics, digging into the wealth of material afforded to us through our growing University Libraries’ Comics collection, hoping to open up a realm of discovery onto worlds of comics to be enjoyed and to be taken very seriously!

Exhibit Curators: Kaoukab Chebaro and Hana Sleiman.

Acknowledgements: Many thanks go to the Mu’taz and Rada Sawwaf Arabic Comics Initiative for supporting the physical exhibit and the development of our AUB Library comics collection, on which this exhibit is based.

Special thanks go to Ghofran Akil for the long hours she put in the design products, to Sara Jawad for her support in design, to Yasmine Younes for her background research, patience and support; and most of all, to Lina Ghaibeh for her relentless hard work and unwavering support throughout the planning and realization of the exhibit, for her leadership with the Comics Initiative at AUB, and for her contagious enthusiasm and passion for Arab comics!
