Saab Medical Library (SML) launches its new and improved website

AUB Libraries gladly announces the launch of its new and improved Saab Medical Library (SML) webpage, incorporating the library’s status as a valuable and long-standing medical information provider.

The website represents a true user-friendly experience and patrons can now easily navigate the site to find answers and resources that cater to their queries.

Some of the website’s new features include:

  • Daily medical news: news extracted by physicians for physicians.
  • Separate modules for various user categories, namely physicians, nurses, public health users and patients.  Each module contains most important tools for the most frequent queries.
  • Evidence by Specialty: an expanded one-place shopping for evidence arranged by specialty, to update clinicians with highest evidence in an easy and efficient time-saving way.
  • Highlights: highlighting options such as Journal Club, MedicalApps, medical calculators, Change your Practice and others.

We invite all AUBites, and especially those who are in the medical field, to visit the new website and enjoy the experience.

SML re-opens its renovated facility!

The University Libraries is glad to announce the reopening of Saab Medical Library’s facility after renovation.

On Monday 22nd of February, SML will open from 8:00am to 5:00pm, and it will resume the regular schedule as of Tuesday 23rdas follows:

Weekdays: 8:00am – 12:00midnight

Saturday: 8:00am – 8:00pm

Sunday: 12:00noon – 12:00midnight

Arab comics in the Curriculum: the AUB Libraries Collection

AUB Libraries is glad to invite you to a journey through its growing comics Collection.

Join us to discover  a new comics character, appreciate a new artist, reminisce about a favorite comics serials from your childhood, savor the beauty and liveliness of the comics medium, its ability to capture the pulse of the time, and to say what cannot be said otherwise, in fun, bold, and truthful manners! Enjoy the wealth and depth of our flourishing and deeply rooted Arab comics tradition!

The exhibit showcases our AUB Libraries’ growing comics collection, and tries to offer a survey of Arab comics, across geographic locations, time, formats, subjects, mediums, etc. and to encourage the integration of comics into liberal arts college curricula, across disciplines.

Curated by the AUB Libraries in partnership with the Mu’taz and Rada Sawwaf Arabic Comics Initiative at AUB.

OPENING: Monday March 7th @ 6pm

Evening of Arabic poetry and music

The Iraqi Club at AUB, in collaboration with Jafet Library, is glad to invite you to enjoy Arabic poetry and music.

As part of the series “Umsiyat rusul al-rahmah al she’riya”, the Iraqi Club is organizing an evening of Arabic poetry and music with the poets Mahdi Mansur and Alaa Kayali, and the musician Samer Abu-Noor.

Mahdi Masour, a Lebanese poet who got his PHD in physics 4 months ago.  He has already published six poetry collections, the latest  was launched during  the Beirut International Book Fair, “الظلُّ فجرٌّ داكن”.

Alaa kayali, is an AUB senior student majoring in Arabic literature. He is active on the literary scene and has organized a series of poetry events with The Iraqi Cultural club at AUB.

Samer Abu Al-Nour, a Syrian Musician, oud player.

Books will be offered as gifts to the poets, musician, and some of the audience.

When: Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 6:00pm.

UL staff member taking part in upcoming “SOS ART LIBAN”

We are glad to announce that Ms. May Talhouk, a member of our Archives and Special Collections staff is taking part in the upcoming  event entitled: “SOS ART LIBAN“, a community art show and event of creative expressions for Peace and Justice.

May is a talented artist and has been painting since she was five. She has taken part in several exhibits and displays.Join the event to enjoy May’s work, as well as the works of many other local talents.

Opening ceremony is on Friday, February 19th from 6 to 9 pm

SOS ART Liban is organized in partnership with SOS ART Cincinnati-USA, Wahdatouna Khalassouna (commemorating the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Lebanese civil war) and l’Agenda Culturel.

Biography: May Talhouk

May Talhouk is a deaf painter.

Her paining talent was discovered when she was five years old. During the civil war in Lebanon, she took painting lessons at the Hamawi Art Center- Ras Beirut, where she lived nearby, and graduated with a Painting Diploma, acknowledged by the Lebanese Government.  May’s paintings emphasize vivid colors, which reflect her inner feelings of joy for life, and at the same time her peace of mind expressed by the transparency of her technical expressions.

In 2004, May graduated with a BA degree in Art History from the Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., the only university for the deaf in the world. May was the first prize winner in the International Art Competition for Deaf Students in Larnaca- Cyprus in the year 1992.

May has exhibited from 1995 until 2015 seven solo exhibitions, and eight collective ones in Lebanon, Washington D.C., and London.

“The War As I See It” Photo Contest: Award Ceremony and Photo Exhibition

The University Libraries are glad to be hosting an upcoming event entitled: The War As I See It a photo contest, including an award ceremony and a photo exhibition.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the end of the Lebanese civil war, the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) organized a youth photo contest to encourage young people in Lebanon to explore their understanding of the war’s legacy as it shapes their country’s past and present.

From 26 entries, the winners were selected by a jury composed of professional photographers, members of civil society and representatives of the organizers. All 26 photos will be part of a traveling photo exhibition throughout Lebanon aimed at sparking conversation and debate about the legacy of the war.

On February 12, ICTJ will host a ceremony to announce the winners and launch the photo exhibition. The event will be followed by a discussion on truth telling and memory that will give the winners and selected participants an opportunity to reflect with other youth and experts on the war and political violence and on their role in promoting dialogue and building peace.

When? Friday, February 12, 3:30pm-6:00pm. Cocktail to follow.

Where? Jafet Library, American University of Beirut, Lebanon

This event is organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland in Lebanon, the Embassy of France in Lebanon, the French Institute in Lebanon, the French Institute for the Near-East, the Political Science Institute at Saint-Joseph University and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Media Studies at the American University of Beirut.
