Graphic Design students produce creative videos about UL as part of Motion Graphics Course

In News and Announcements,Projects by AUB Libraries / October 30, 2015 / 3 Comments

Third year graphic design students taking the “Motion Graphics” course last spring with Dr. Lina Ghaibeh of FEA worked on animations targeting the main concerns in the University Libraries and presented amazing outcomes.

The Libraries invited the students to help portray certain problems by designing and producing short videos featuring the library and/or its services in a concise, yet creative way.

Themes of the videos covered: Libraries services are countless; Get to know your library; What can I do at the library? ; Silence at the library; Library Code of Conduct, and others.

The videos came out to be very creative and portrayed the issues at hand with a classy sense of humor. They target the entire AUB Community, but especially students who use library resources.

The students had great storyboards and characters and visited the Library premises many times when shooting the videos, which took an immense amount of work.

The video titles were: “It’s not that hard to find a book”, “Mission in Jafet”, “El Hob Ramani: Wedding in Jafet”, “Bob the Cat: The Librarian”, and “Wallah Haram”.

The University Libraries would like to thank all the students for their creativity and hard work, not forgetting Dr. Lina Ghaibeh, who guided the projects and who helped us see the students’ perspectives about the Library.

The videos have been posted on our social media platforms. Let us know what you think!

Exhibition: “The Main Gate: A Witness to AUB’s Times”

In Events by AUB Libraries / October 15, 2015 / 0 Comments
As the American University of Beirut approaches its 150th anniversary, and to celebrate the renovation of AUB’s Main Gate, the Archives and Special Collections department at the University Libraries have launched an exhibit entitled “The Main Gate: A Witness to AUB’s Times”.

The exhibit presents items from the AUB’s and other collections falling under four main rubrics.

The first is “Gates and their significance” which provides a historical and architectural overview of gates, triumphal arches, and city gates.

The second is titled “1901-1902: Main Gate Building: Planning, Architecture, and Function” which delves into the rationale, planning, funding, choice of architect, location of the building, and more.

Third is “A Gate that has seen it All! A Witness to AUB’s times!” provides a visual-textual chronicle of the events that the Main Gate has witnessed since 1902, ranging from the visit of the Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru to student protests to graduation ceremonies.

Last but not least, “Main Gate in their Own Words” displays a collection of essays about the Main Gate written by the students and members of the AUB community.

The exhibit also contains an architectural model of the Main Gate, as well as a short film about our beloved Gate.

The event has already been covered by Assafir and the Daily Star.

Visit the exhibit and travel through the times that AUB and the Main Gate have witnessed!

The Exhibit will run until Friday October 23, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., in Malhas Common Room, West Hall.

New in Research Services: UL Research Guides move to new, upgraded platform

In News and Announcements by AUB Libraries / October 9, 2015 / 0 Comments

The University Libraries are glad to announce that they have recently upgraded the platform of their Research Guides to better serve patrons.

Library Research guides help researchers find reliable, high-quality information. Our guides are created by librarians who are experienced about subjects in a wide array of disciplines and about best practice in information retrieval.

Researchers can search the University Libraries’ research guides by keyword, subject, type, or by the alphabetically ordered list to find the appropriate guide.

We invite you to check the new platform to find:

  • Subject Guides: Get an overview of the resources our subject experts found to be the best on a given subject area. You can browse alphabetically or by topic. Once you’ve found the guide pertaining to your subject, you’re just a few clicks away from quality sources for your research.
  • How-to Guides: Explore helpful guides on library essentials, such as how to cite sources, manage your references, find government documents, find reference information, or search for primary sources. Advanced tutorials also offer help on more specialized topics.
  • Topic Guides: Find resources specific to a topic and get tips on where and how to go to find relevant information.
  • Course Guides: Course guides are class-specific resources developed to help you get started with your research and to maximize your educational experience. You’ll find librarian-created lists of top resources and tips to get your project started.

We hope you enjoy the new platform and find the guides useful and helpful for your research.

For more about this topic, contact Jafet Library via or call 01-350 000 ext. 2629/2621.
