Mohammed Al-Sharekh, Chairman of the SAKHR Software Company, visits AUB to discuss Artificial Intelligence and Modernization of Arabic Language

In Events,News and Announcements,Workshops by AUB Libraries / January 11, 2018 / 3 Comments

More than 70 AUB faculty members, visitors, librarians, as well as professionals and researchers from universities and institutions across Lebanon gathered on the morning of Thursday, January 4, 2018 at West Hall, Auditorium B, to attend a discussion about “Artificial Intelligence and Modernization of Arabic Language” by Mohammed Al-Sharekh, Chairman of the SAKHR Software Company.

The discussion was in Arabic and was moderated by Dr. Ghassan Mourad, Computational Linguistics professor at the Lebanese University.

The head of the Research and Instruction Services department at the University Libraries, Mrs. Fatmeh Charafeddine, welcomed the attendees and introduced Al-Sharekh and Mourad.

Mr. Al-Sharekh spoke about his journey of founding Sakhr Software Co. in 1982 and its achievements in developing technical solutions to meet the unique requirements of Arabic language. The company became a pioneer in introducing Arabic language to the computer and proceeded in developing solutions including an Arabic OCR software, an Arabic Natural Language Processing technique, an automated dictionary for modern and automated solutions for Arabic verb tenses and letter punctuation. Sakhr is the only company in the MENA to hold multiple US patents for Arabic computational linguistics.

Dr. Mourad commended al-Sharekh on his many achievements and highlighted the importance of Sakhr innovation and software, which, after all these years, still represent a valuable tool for modern-day computer/communication experts. Mourad inquired about the challenges that faced – and still do face- the company. Al-Sharekh explained that the company had to stop its activities due to the lack of support from governmental agencies in funding research activities and in protecting the company’s products from plagiarism.

Asked about what he was doing now, Al-Sharekh explained that he was working on collecting and digitizing an archive of Arabic intellectual journals and posting them online for the public to access and read.

Al-Sharekh also writes short stories and articles and is an art collector with a very valuable and elite art collection

AUB Library Open Day 2017: Library Comic Con

In Events by AUB Libraries / October 2, 2017 / 0 Comments

Hundreds of AUB students enjoyed a day of competitions that were both, fun and challenging on Thursday September 28 during the “Library Open Day 2017: Library Comic Con”.

The event was packed with fun competitions, helping students learn about the library services and meet library staff. The Comic Con also featured an exhibit of comics and other valuable material from the Archives and Special Collections of the AUB University Libraries, in addition to collectables and special edition items from the Library staff’s personal collections.

The Exhibit will be on display in the Lobby at Jafet Library until Friday October 6th, so pass by and have a look if you can.

Students and Library staff had fun using the geeky props and took so many pictures as souvenirs of this memorable event. Pictures speak for themselves…so please visit our social media channels for more: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blog (#LibComiCon) Here is the Facebook Photo Album. Feel free to tag your friends/colleagues and share!

The prizes this year included 2 iPads, 1 tablet, 1 Apple watch, 5 BLOM Shabeb Prepaid cards worth $200 each, collectible items related to the theme, in addition to more than 100 books and vouchers offering free trips inside Lebanon. More than 1,500 giveaway material, coffee, and snacks were also distributed.

Our games this year were as geeky as our theme:

  • The Riddler: Use augmented reality via your smart phone to solve the Riddler’s challenges scattered all over Jafet . . .
  • Test your X-Ray Vision: While blind-folded, identify items in the mystery box using your bare hands . . . was that Kryptonite you just touched?!
  • Geek Jeopardy: The good old Jeopardy game, with an evil-genius Librarian’s twist…
  • Guardians of the Library: Save the books from the infinite shelves of the Library stacks. Take a book home with you.
  • Heroes Strike a Pose: Dress up as your favorite superhero or use the props at the Library, follow the UL Libraries on Instagram.

Exhibit – “Crucial Turns: A Critical Mapping of Art at AUB”

In Events by AUB Libraries / May 26, 2017 / 0 Comments

AUB faculty, students and staff gathered on the evening of Tuesday, May 23rd at the Nami Jafet Memorial Library for the opening ceremony of a capstone exhibition curated by three AUB Art History students displaying material depicting critical turns in Art at AUB since in the foundation of the Fine Art Department since the 1950s.

The exhibit is curated by Katharine Gordon, Lama El Khatib and Nour Osseiran, all three of which are AUB students, who initiated and completed this project as part of the “Theories, Methods, and Practices of Curating” (AHIS284) seminar at AUB; a seminar that acts as a capstone for the students within the Art History major.

The course is instructed by Angela Harutyunyan, Associate Professor at the Department of Fine Arts and Art History at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, AUB, who said that the importance of this exhibit is that it is a first attempt to bring to light the rich history of art at AUB as formed by and formative of the art scene in Beirut and Lebanon at large. For the students, it is an opportunity to understand and historicize art and art history education that they themselves are undergoing.

The exhibit gives tribute to artists such as Walid Sadek, Daniele Genadry, David Kurani, Arthur Frick, and John Carswell. The material displayed include original paintings that were generously provided by the artists, in addition to photos, sketches, posters and other primary sources found at the Archives and Special Collections department at the University Libraries.

The exhibit will remain on display at the lobby at Jafet Library until Friday, June 2nd.

The curators believe that the exhibition brings together a montage of key moments and figures in and around the Art Department at AUB since its inception and throughout its tumultuous history by using archival material, which provide a general overview of what has been documented – from 1946 until today. Presenting these documents alongside contemporary art works, the curators hope to engage the audience in a critical journey of the art department at AUB.
