Library Databases and e-Books Subscriptions during 2017-2018

The University Libraries is always on the lookout to subscribe to new and specialized databases and packages in order to best support research and teaching at AUB.

In 2017 and 2018, the UL has expanded its subscription to more databases and e-books offerings, covering an array of subject areas and types of material. The UL also upgraded some of its subscriptions to include more content, especially of recent years.

We invite you to explore these databases and e-books collections and to enjoy the exclusive access you have to them.

Eight UL staff members visit Koç University in Istanbul as part of the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program

Eight staff from the AUB University Libraries visited Koç University in Istanbul from June 18 until June 22 as part of the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program. This is the second time AUB Library staff visit Koç University as part of this program during this year.

The staff who took part in the Erasmus+ program this time were:

  • Ziad Yamut, Engineering and Architecture Library Assistant, Engineering and Architecture Library

During their visit, the UL staff had the chance to share information and expertise with fellow Library staff from Koç University’s Suna Kiraç Library.

About the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program

Supported by the European Union, the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program is managed by the Office of International Programs (OIP) at AUB and allows full-time employees to receive funding for job shadowing, such as participating in the daily work at a partner university, business or organization.

Open Archives Day at the University Libraries: Friday June 8, 2018

The Archives and Special Collections,  AUB University Libraries is pleased to invite you on Friday June 8, 2018 to visit its premises and discover its collections and services, on the occasion of International Open Archives Day.

The Open Archives Day is an international annual event celebrated on June 9 at archives and cultural heritage preservation institutions around the globe. It is a great opportunity for you to get to discover documents related to AUB, Lebanon and the region’s history, from our archival and unique collections: on display will be select items in different formats, including posters, photographs, maps, comic books, archives, and more.

The Archives and Special Collections Department (ASC) collects, organizes, preserves and provides access to unique, historical and rare primary sources that document the history and culture of AUB, Lebanon, the Arab World and the region at large. Our collections include more than 1,800 manuscripts; 5,000 posters; 800 postcards; 2,001 maps; 70,000 photographs; and 940 linear feet of archival material, including papers of famous intellectuals, 9,229 volumes of theses, projects, and dissertations going back to 1906; in addition to around 2,000 rare books and a number of unique serials.

“Al-Nakba” Research Guide: featured at the University Libraries

On the Nakba anniversary, the University Libraries would like to remind its patrons of their research guide about “Al-Nakba – النكبة”.

The guide was created in support of The Palestinian Oral History Archives Project at AUB University Libraries and focuses on the various aspects of historiography of the 1948 Palestinian Nakba and highlights relevant library resources, projects and websites related to this topic.

The guide includes a collection of key reference and library items, as well as important timelines, and online resources about topics related to the Nakba, including: Historiography, Demographic Changes, Land Transformation, National Resistance, Refugees and their Right to Return, and other cultural resources and projects.

The University Libraries at the Arab Renaissance: Renewal of the Civilizational Message Conference in Amman

The University Libraries partnered with The Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD) during the “Arab Renaissance: Renewal of the Civilizational Message” conference in Amman, held on April 25 and 26, 2018.

The conference was organized by The Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development and featured the discourse of  prominent Muslim and Arab philosophers concerning the need for a new renaissance in the Islamic and Arab political thinking. Dr. Mariette Atallah, Head of the Collection Development Department, participated in organizing an exhibit of library collections on the Arab Nahda. Fatmeh Charafeddine, Head of the Research and Instruction Services Department, gave a presentation on the importance of the Nahda collections held at AUB and about the wide interest of researchers from all over the world in this collection.

Among the attendees of the conference from AUB were Dr. Tarek Mitri as speaker and Dr. Rana Issa as moderator.

Check out our newly revamped finding aids web page. With over 20 finding aids posted so far (more is coming soon, so stay tuned!), you will discover uniquely held documents that are certain to add a grassroots perspective to your teaching and research. Check out finding aids of collections from a variety of disciplinary outlooks and historical angles, including gender studies, intellectual history, posters, typography, economic and oil history in the region, and of course, the University archival collections that document the history of our beloved AUB!

Come visit the Archives and Special Collections Department in the basement of Jafet library to access these collections on site.

Exhibit: Compendiums of Giving

In this exhibit, the University Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections showcase around 25 recently donated archival collections to the AUB Libraries. We hope that these unique archival collections will go a long way to support AUB’s liberal arts education mission, and will also support and encourage novel grassroots research about and from the region, in a variety of disciplines and topics (art, education, history, visual culture, economic history, social studies, Arab intellectuals, urban planning and architecture, gender studies, comics and caricature, etc.).

We thank all our donors, without whom this would not have been possible.
