Research and Thesis Writing Workshop Series for Graduate Students

The University Libraries launched the “Research and Thesis Writing Workshop Series” catered for Graduate students, in collaboration with the AUB Writing Center.

Established in coordination with the Graduate Council and the Graduate Student Society at AUB, the aim of the workshop series is to introduce continuing graduate students to key concepts in research and academic writing, and to inform them about academic support available at AUB.

The series consists of 4 workshops to be held throughout the academic year:

1.Getting Started with Graduate Research

2.Getting Your Thesis Proposal Started

3.Resources for Thesis Writers

4.After Your Thesis: Getting Published

The first two workshops have been held already during the fall semester of 2014.

University Libraries and the Center for Teaching and Learning hold second faculty workshop about e-books

The University Libraries (UL) in partnership with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at AUB organized the second faculty-special workshop for this academic year.

The workshop was held in the Antoun Ghattas Karam e-Classroom in Jafet Memorial Library on the afternoon of Thursday November 13th and was entitled: “How to download and read offline E-books from AUB libraries?”.

During the workshop, attendees were walked through the process of identifying and accessing e-books. The workshop served as a hands-on session, where faculty members applied the step-by-step process with the assistance of facilitators from the Research and Instruction Services department at Jafet.

Announcement: 2nd Community Book Exchange Meet-up

The University Libraries and the Neighborhood Initiative at AUB are glad to announce the second meet-up for their Community Book Exchange program, which will be held on Wednesday, November 26th at 6:00 pm at the WAAAUB Clubhouse, Mary Dodge Hall, thanks to the courtesy of the WAAAUB, who will be hosting the event this time and offering the refreshments.

Remember that participation is simple: bring a book to take a book!

Launching Event: Community Book Exchange

The University Libraries and the Neighborhood Initiative at AUB launched the Community Book Exchange program on Thursday October 16, 2014 at the Jafet Library Courtyard.  More than 80 people showed up and got introduced to the program, and around 50 of them exchanged books from their personal collections.

The idea of the program is straightforward: “Participation is simple: bring a book to take a book”.

New LibGuide: Arabic Comic Books

In support of the newly launched Mu’taz and Rada Sawwaf Arabic Comics Initiative at the American University of Beirut, the University Libraries are pleased to announce the publication of their new guide “Arabic Comic Books“. The guide includes a panoply of key reference and library items, as well as select online resources related to comic books as well as to graphic novels in the Arab world. It also features, among other resources, a timetable highlighting selected Lebanese comic books published between the years 1952 and 2009.

The AUB Libraries launches its first online exhibit: “Dar al-Fata al-Arabi Publishing House and Mohieddine al-Labbad”

The AUB Libraries is delighted to announce the launch on Wednesday September 17th, 2014, of its first online exhibit “Dar al-Fata al-Arabi Publishing House and Mohieddine al-Labbad“, which is accessible through our Library home page, and our Archives and Special Collections page . This is the first in a forthcoming series of exhibits using the web-publishing platform Omeka that allows us to showcase samples and highlights from our collections online. The viewer will get a glimpse onto the rich material held at the AUB Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections, which can be browsed and enjoyed on our premises, at the Jafet Library Archives and Special Collections Department.

AUB Library Open Day 2014

More than 400 students joined the University Libraries in celebrating the third AUB Library Open Day last Tuesday on September 16th , 2014 at the Jafet Memorial Library.

The event included more than 10 competitions and games. Students played and learned about the library services and met the library staff, while having fun and competing at the same time.

Many prizes were offered to participating students thanks to the generosity of the event sponsors, including: a PlayStation4, 2 PlayStation4 games, an iPad Mini, a Samsung Tablet, an instant Camera, a Digital camera, 6 Prepaid Cards worth LBP250,000 each, 15 Selfie sticks, along with more than 100 books.

AUB Libraries Chat Service

The AUB University libraries is pleased to announce the launch of its new live Chat service.

As of now, library users can chat with a librarian in real-time and get instant feedback, skipping the long phone queues and the back-and-forth trail of emails.
To use the chat service, simply click on the chat icon on the University Libraries webpage and select, according to your query, one of the following departments: Jafet, Science or Engineering to be directed to the right representative.

The chat service is available during weekdays from 8:00 am till 11:00 pm and Saturdays from 8:00 am till 5:00 pm. For times when chat is offline, users can still use all other channels to send inquiries and communicate with the Libraries.

AUB Libraries joins US libraries to create a digital library of over 100,000 Arabic volumes

The American University of Beirut (AUB) Libraries has joined Arabic Collections Online (ACO), a five-year project funded by New York University Abu Dhabi that aims to digitize and make accessible worldwide over 100,000 volumes of Arabic content.

Along with New York University Libraries and its partners, the AUB libraries will create the Arabic Collections Online (ACO) project, a major digitization project funded by New York University Abu Dhabi, whose aim is to create a digital library of public-domain Arabic language content of over 100,000 volumes. Partners in this substantial digitization of Arabic content already include numerous prominent North American institutions, and the AUB libraries are the first ones outside the United States to join the project. The AUB University Libraries will contribute several thousand titles from their growing rich and historical Arabic collections in a variety of subjects and disciplines.
