In Library Staff,News and Announcements by AUB Libraries / July 25, 2018 / 0 Comments

The University Libraries proudly announces that Mr. Maher Kassab, University Libraries’ IT Manager, has received the President’s Service Excellence Award for 2018.

In the presence of loving family, friends and colleagues, Maher received the award along with three other AUB and AUBMC staff members, during a ceremony held by President Fadlo Khuri on Tuesday, July 10 at 11:30am in Assembly Hall.

Presenting Maher at the award ceremony, President Khuri said, “Maher loves his colleagues…and it’s safe to say today [referring to the attendees’ cheering] that they clearly love him back. People talk about his limitless enthusiasm for his work at the University Libraries. He is known all over campus as a colleague who always stops by to help…even if it’s not his project, showing that he is invested in everything that AUB does.

With both, his technical and management skills, which he has gained throughout his career at AUB, Maher was able to come up with innovative solutions and overcome technical challenges. Since his appointment as IT Manager at the University Libraries, he was able to transform the IT infrastructure and tools at the Libraries to a “state-of-the-art” level, despite the limited resources.

Talking about his career at AUB, Maher says, “I am so grateful to AUB for making my professional career happen. The exposure, the opportunities and the experience here have been unparalleled.”  Adding, “I am very honored to have received this prestigious award. The recognition takes on a special meaning when great family, friends and colleagues are so supportive and caring.

Maher holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer and Communications from the Lebanese University and a Masters of Business Administration from AUB. He has been working at the Office of Information Technology at AUB since 2003, and was appointed as IT Manager for the University Libraries in 2013.

An article about the ceremony was posted on the AUB website.

Basma Chebani, Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services and Nabila Shehabeddine, Research and Instruction Services Librarian at the AUB Libraries attended and presented during the the MELCom 40th annual conference held from the 19th till the 21st of June, 2018.

Hosted by the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, the event was a three-day annual conference that included scientific communications and visits to local libraries and/or museums as well as to institutions of interest to the MI community. The meetings are held in a different country every year, alternating Europe and the MENA region.

Chebani’s presentation was about the contribution of OCLC, LC and IFLA in the structuring of bibliographic data and authorities to be part of Linked Data for more visibility on the Web and included examples from the AUB Library experience. The presentation shows the experience of the American University of Beirut in applying the best practices proposed by the Library of Congress and the PCC Task Team for URIs in MARC records as a step ahead for Linked Data.

Shehabeddine’s presentation, on the other hand, was entitled “Copyright and intellectual property; copyright and fair use: Lebanon as a case study”.

The University Libraries have published a research guide for copyright, which provides information and resources on copyright law in Lebanon and how it relates to academic activities such as research, teaching, and publication. You can access the guide here.
