Five staff from the AUB University Libraries visited Koç University in Istanbul from March 26 until March 30 to attend the first “International Library Staff Week” as part of the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility program.

During their visit, the UL staff had the chance to share information and expertise with fellow Library staff from different parts of the world including China, England, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Albania, Azerbaijan, Morocco, and Turkey, of course.

Presentations and discussions were interactive and thought provoking, covering common Library challenges, along with ideas to overcome those challenges. The theme of the event was “Academic Libraries: Hubs without Borders”.

On the first day of the event, Sahar Ghandour, Business Information Specialist at the Research and Instruction Services department gave a general overview of the University Libraries and introduced the attending AUB staff. During the week, Sara Jawad, Web and Graphic Designer at the Library Systems and Applications Department presented about “Visual Communication in Libraries” and provided tips for non-designers.  Nina Ghannam, Digitization Quality Assurance Supervisor at the Digital Initiatives and Preservation Services presented “AUB University Libraries Digitization Overview and Best Practices” as part of the Turkish National Library Week Program – “International Librarians Meet Where Continents Meet”. Rola Mneimneh, Serials and e-Resources Assistant Librarian, and Hussein Mokdad, Acquisitions Assistant Librarian, also attended the event and participated in all the meetings and discussions.

The International Library Staff Week at Koç University Libraries not only allowed room for information sharing, but also created new networks and built new partnerships among the peer universities.

University Libraries’ research data services librarian co-authors scholarly article about Research Data Management

In Library Staff,News and Announcements by AUB Libraries / March 12, 2018 / 0 Comments

AUB University Libraries’ research data services librarian, Dalal Rahme, joined efforts with Dr. Gladys Saade, Professor at the Faculty of Information at the Lebanese University to co-author and publish an article entitled “Research Data Reshaping Cultural Society: Case of the Lebanese University”

The article is published through Springer, but is also openly accessible through Academia.

In their article, the authors discuss Research Data Management (RDM) as a new practice at the level of Lebanese academic institutions and then assess technological and organizational needs specific to the Lebanese University (LU) as a case study.

The methodology comprised a questionnaire that was sent to academics in the different faculties/branches of the University.

Results of the questionnaire revealed the concerns, challenges and commitment levels of researchers when it comes to data management and information sharing, such that there was a moderate level of awareness of information literacy and RDM practices.

The paper serves as a guiding example for educational institutions to develop services that support different activities in this field of work.

When asked about the paper, Rahme said: “We really enjoyed working together on this research paper. Dr. Gladys and I experienced some challenges, especially in the data collection part. We took the Lebanese University as an example, but the case is not really different in any other academic institution in Lebanon or the region. We hope to draw the attention to the importance of adopting good research data management practices in academia, as this will foster collaboration among academics across both disciplines and institutions in Lebanon and the region. We started data service two years ago at AUB but still, so much work needs to be done in this area.”

Librarians from the AUB University Libraries take part in the eighth international conference on effective teaching and learning in higher education

In Events,Library Staff,Workshops by AUB Libraries / February 20, 2018 / 0 Comments

Two Librarians from the University Libraries participated in the eighth international conference on effective teaching and learning in higher education, an annual meet-up for academics and researchers from different local, regional and global educational institutions. This year, the conference focused on endorsed trans-formative learning and was co-hosted by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the Office of Information Technology, and the Communication Skills Program at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at AUB.

Nabila Shehabeddine, Research and Instruction Librarian, presented with Jasmina Najjar, Instructor at the Communication Skills Program. They discussed the collaboration between them to help students understand and identify fake news.

The presentation, entitled: “The Medium is the Message: two different writing assignments to aid students in identifying fake news” explained how integrating creative assignments into the classroom helped students realize how easy it was to create their own fake news and provided them with hands-on experience to know what elements construct fake news. The Libraries supported the learning process by providing best-practice tools and reference material and then published a Research Guide about fake news to benefit the AUB research community.  The session was attended by more than 50 people, and was followed by an interactive Q&A session.

Joyce Aways, Research and Instruction Librarian, presented a poster about an ongoing initiative she is working on at the University Libraries, which assesses the effectiveness of the Libraries’ instruction program.

Taking the library sessions of English 102, English 203 and English 204 classes as a sample, Aways presented the data collected through pre and post tests completed by the attending students before and then after the one-shot session offered by the Libraries. The assessment helps in evaluating the content and the effectiveness of the sessions and it allows the Libraries to methodically revisit the sessions and improve as needed. The project is ongoing and the plan is to integrate such assessment tests into other library instruction sessions. Several attendees stopped by the poster and asked interesting questions about this initiative.

The conference was an ideal platform for education professionals to share knowledge and network.
