The AUB University Libraries staff members were active in planning, speaking and attending the Lebanese Library Association’s fourth national conference entitled “Innovative Libraries: Paths to the Future”, at Le Commodore Hotel- Beirut between May 9 and 11, 2018.
The 3-day conference featured speakers from the USA, Europe, Asia, Africa, Lebanon and the Arab world and covered topics related to the new, re-imagined role of libraries as dynamic meeting spaces and hubs, as well as digital repositories and boundary-free information providers.
Hundreds of professionals and students from the Library, Research and Information Science fields attended the conference, in addition to tens of Information and Data providers who sponsored the event and interacted with attendees in the exhibit area. Around 30 AUB University Libraries (UL) staff members attended the conference, networked and shared mutual insight with attendees from different institutions.
Dr. Lokman Meho, the AUB University Librarian, was an invited speaker during the first session of the conference and discussed the use of bibliometrics for collection development and for advancing the status of libraries and librarians on campus. The session was moderated by Dr. Mariette Atallah, Head of Collection Development department at the UL.
Basma Chebani, Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services at the UL, presented about contribution of OCLC Schema, IFLA/LRM entities and LC in the structuring of the Bibliographic Data and Authorities within the Linked Data for more visibility on the Web: Experience of the American University of Beirut Libraries.
Dalal Rahme, the UL’s Data Services librarian and Secretary of the Lebanese Library Association, spoke about Data Services at AUB and examined the opportunities and the challenges facing this field. Rahme was also an active member in the LLA Conference Organizing Committee.
Rudaynah Shoujaa, Head of Serials & Electronic Resources department at the UL and former Secretary of the Lebanese Library Association (LLA) was an active member of the LLA Conference Organizing Committee all through the organizing process.
The AUB Libraries are more than glad to have been a part of this successful LLA event, which provided opportunities for networking and information sharing amongst Librarians and professionals in the field.
